Lithium carbonate
Indications/Uses
Manic episodes of manic depressive illness.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 300 mg daily, may gradually increase to 900 mg in divided doses. Manic depressive disease Up to 1.8 g daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Severe CV impairment, Na depletion, hypothyroidism. Concurrent administration of diuretics in patients w/ Addison's disease. Severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Fever, infections, mood swings. Regularly monitor serum conc. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vertigo, fine hand tremor, polyuria, muscle weakness, somnolence & lethargy, diarrhea, hyperparathyroidism w/ hypercalcaemia, leukocytosis, wt gain, edema, cardiac arrhythmias, exacerbation of skin conditions, impaired renal function, mild cognitive & memory impairment, hypothyroidism &/or goiter.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ Na-containing medications, metronidazole, spectinomycin, tetracycline, carbamazepine, phenytoin, verapamil, mazindol, methyldopa, phenothiazines, haloperidol, NSAIDs, theophylline, antidepressants; diuretics.
